LED and Fiber Optic Halloween Costume Ideas for 2026

Ants on a Melon 9 min read

Halloween 2026 lands on a Saturday, which means real parties, long nights, and costumes that have to work in the dark. Glow is the cheat code: an LED or fiber optic costume reads from across the street in a way face paint and store-bought polyester never will. We are Ants on a Melon - we design the app-controlled RGB Critter BT and the Fiber Optic Costume Kit in Oregon - and this is the idea list: costumes built around light, the exact pieces that make each one, and how to keep it all glowing until the last porch light goes out. When you are ready to actually attach fibers to fabric, our fiber optic costume guide covers the build itself, step by step.

Costumes that actually glow

Every costume here is a real build, worn and filmed on our own lights. Pick one, then grab what is listed under it.

Fiber optic wings spread in front of the Bay Bridge at night
Fiber optic wings over both outstretched arms at dusk

01

Fairy Wings

A harness sits between the shoulder blades with the light clipped right there, and the fibers fan out over each arm. Raise your arms and the wings open, drop them and they fold. In the dark, only the glowing outline is left.

Wings by designer Natalie Walsh, shot at dusk in San Francisco.

Step-by-step wings guide →

Build it with

Tip

End Glow puts the brightest points right at the wing edges. Mind the wingspan at doorways.

Witch in a pointed hat holding a glowing fiber broom and an orb
Witch sitting on a rock at night with a glowing fiber broom staff

02

Witch With a Light Staff

A pointed hat, a short black dress and a broom that actually glows. A fiber bundle woven down a wooden staff sweeps light across the ground with every step. Swap the hat for a deep hooded robe and the same staff makes a wizard.

Costume by Maia Friedlander (@unnaturalglow), from our Space Witch shoot.

Build it with

Tip

Keep the outfit dark and let the staff do all the talking.

White fiber optic dress leaving light trails in front of a brick wall

Fiber optic fringe glowing at the hem of a white dress

03

Light-Up Dress

A white corset dress with fibers sewn in lines down the bodice and left loose below the hem. The skirt ends in a fringe of light that swings with every step, and in the dark only the glowing lines are left.

Dress by designer Natalie Walsh, shot on the San Francisco waterfront.

Step-by-step dress guide →

Build it with

Tip

Leave the fiber ends loose under the hem. That is where all the sparkle is.

Fur coat with fiber optic bursts from both sleeves
Fur coat glowing green with fiber optics on a rock at night

04

Glowing Fur Coat

A faux fur coat with fiber bundles run down the lining and out of each cuff. Every twirl throws a fan of color from your hands, and the fur catches the glow all around you.

Coat by Maia Friedlander (@unnaturalglow), from our Coat Dance shoot.

Step-by-step coat guide →

Build it with

Tip

Pick fluffy white fur. It soaks up the light and glows along with the fibers.

Fiber line bodysuit glowing blue with light trails

05

Light Line Bodysuit

A black bodysuit with fibers sewn in curves down the chest and hips. Against the dark the suit disappears and only the outline is left, like a drawing that moves.

Bodysuit by Maia Friedlander (@unnaturalglow), from our Fyber Kit shoots.

Build it with

Tip

Keep the suit itself plain black so nothing competes with the lines.

Fiber line dress glowing pink on a dark dance floor

06

Cyberpunk Raver

A black dress wrapped in fiber lines, with a fringe of glowing tips at the hem, so your silhouette is drawn in neon. Change the color from the app and the whole outfit changes with the music. It doubles as your festival outfit for the rest of the year.

Clips by @ravemage, on the dance floor.

Build it with

Tip

Save a custom playlist per party in the app. One press changes the whole character.

Smiling under a fiber optic jellyfish bell glowing pink
Fiber optic jellyfish costume with glowing tentacles on a park path at night

07

Jellyfish

Hang fiber strands from the rim of a clear umbrella and they become tentacles that trail and sway as you walk. Set a slow color fade and the whole animal pulses like it's breathing.

Costume by Maia Friedlander (@unnaturalglow), from our Fyber Kit shoots.

Build it with

Tip

Any clear umbrella works. Stick to the 6 ft length, because longer strands drag on wet sidewalks.

Fiber optic rib cage glowing purple with the arms raised
Horned skull and fiber optic rib cage glowing green in front of city towers

08

Skeleton

Draw the rib cage in light on a black outfit and you're a walking X-ray that changes color on command. Lay the fibers along each rib and gather the ends at the spine.

Rib cage by Maia Friedlander (@unnaturalglow), from our Fyber Kit shoots.

Build it with

Tip

Add a horned skull mask and the skeleton turns into a demon.

09

Dark Angel With a Light Saber

Glowing wings on your back, a lit blade in your hand and black from head to toe. Half guardian, half villain, and the blade lights up every photo.

From our website shoot with Maia Friedlander (@unnaturalglow).

Build it with

Tip

Set the wings and the blade to the same color so they read as one character.

10

Mermaid

Fiber loops stitched in a scale pattern down a fitted skirt, flaring into a fin at the ankles. Find a rock to sit on and let the tail do the talking.

Tail by Maia Friedlander (@unnaturalglow), from our Fyber Kit shoots.

Build it with

Tip

Tuck the light at the waist and run a slow ocean fade through blues and greens. Pick coral red instead for a siren.

Fiber optic cage gown glowing red under a city overpass
Fiber optic cage top glowing green over a black gown

11

Phantom

A long black gown with fibers falling from the neckline like a cage, so the dress seems to glow from the inside. It's at its eeriest walking toward you down a dark street.

Top by Maia Friedlander (@unnaturalglow), filmed by Proud Light Russ.

Build it with

Tip

Take the 12 ft length for a floor-length gown and keep the fade slow. Anything faster reads as party, not ghost.

Fiber optic fringe halter glowing purple and white
Fiber optic fringe halter glowing teal at night

12

Electric Flapper

Swap the beaded fringe for light. Fibers hung from a halter swing with every step and flick color as you dance, so your 1920s look is like nothing else at the party.

Top by Maia Friedlander (@unnaturalglow), from our Fyber Kit shoots.

Build it with

Tip

Mount the light at the back of the neck and pick End Glow. The glowing tips are your fringe.

White ball gown with glowing fiber optic ruffles, its shadow on a brick wall

13

Ice Queen or Dark Queen

One kit, two very different gowns. Run fibers through the ruffles of a white ball gown, set them to cold white, and the dress glows like frost in a dark room. Do the same under a black gown with a spiked crown, switch to deep red, and it smoulders.

Gowns by Dianna Dinoble of Starkers Corsetry (@starkerscorsetry), Toronto. Thanks for letting us share them!

Build it with

Tip

A slow pulse reads as breathing. Save a cold mode and a red mode in the app, and switch at the party.

Make it last the whole night

~7 hrson one 18650 battery at typical brightness
$9.95for a spare 18650 that swaps in seconds
USB-Ccharging, so top it up before you leave

That covers trick-or-treating plus the party after it. Cold drains lithium cells faster, so keep the spare in an inside pocket, not a bag, and pack the light, spare and cable in the travel case so nothing vanishes into a costume with no pockets.

The safety angle: glowing kids get seen

Trick-or-treating happens at dusk and after dark, on streets with distracted drivers. A costume that makes its own light is visible from every direction before headlights ever reach it, which reflective tape can’t claim.

01No electronics in the fibersThe strands are just light pipes. All the power lives in one small sealed light with no hot parts and no trailing wires.
02Glow on the back tooDrivers come up from behind as well, so put light on both sides of the costume.
03Buttons for kidsGive kids the simple button controls rather than the app, so they can turn their own costume back on.

Building it: one guide for all of them

Graphic comparing end glow and sparkle fiber options for fiber optic flow props, showing visual differences in brightness, texture, and light effect.

Every costume above attaches the same way:

  1. Anchor the light somewhere you can reach.
  2. Run the bundle along seams or structure.
  3. Secure the strands without kinking them.

The one choice to make before ordering is fiber type: End Glow for saturated points of color at the tips, Sparkle for a twinkling starfield along the strand. Costumes see gentle use, so either holds up here.

And none of it retires on November 1. The light twists out and powers a BitWhip and 200+ other twist-on tools, the bundle re-mounts on the next outfit, and the same rig is the backbone of a playa build - see our Burning Man light costume guide and, if the whip gets its hooks in you, the flow arts guide.

Halloween light costume FAQ

What is the easiest light-up Halloween costume?

Wearing a fiber bundle straight over any black outfit: clip the light at your collar and you are lit in minutes with no sewing. For a full costume, fairy wings are a good first build.

How long will a fiber optic costume run on Halloween night?

Roughly 7 hours on one 18650 battery at typical brightness, which covers trick-or-treating and a party after it. Batteries swap in seconds, so a spare in your pocket removes the worry entirely.

Are light-up costumes safe for kids?

Yes, and they are arguably safer than dark ones. The fibers carry no electronics - all the power lives in one sealed flashlight - and a glowing costume makes a child visible to drivers at dusk in a way a dark costume never is.

Should I pick End Glow or Sparkle fiber for Halloween?

Either works on a costume. End Glow carries the most saturated color to the fiber tips; Sparkle twinkles along the whole strand like a starfield. Costumes see gentle use compared to spun props, so Sparkle's fragility matters less here.

Can I wash the costume afterward?

Remove the light and the fiber bundle first, then wash the garment normally. The fibers wipe clean with a dry cloth, and you should never machine-wash with the bundle attached.

Is the kit reusable after Halloween?

Completely. The light twists out of the costume and powers a BitWhip and 200+ other tools, and the fiber bundle re-mounts on next year's costume, a festival outfit, or a Burning Man build.

Fiber Optic Costume Kit or Costume Accessory?

The Fiber Optic Costume Kit ($189.95 to $259.95) includes the RGB Critter BT that powers the fibers. The Fiber Optic Costume Accessory ($59.95 to $129.95) is the fiber bundle on its own, for when you already own an RGB Critter BT.
