Fiber Optic Whips – Best LED, Dance & Light Whip Techniques

Fiber Optic Whips – Best LED, Dance & Light Whip Techniques

This guide is from the team at Ants on a Melon, the makers of the BitWhip. A fiber optic whip is one of the most beginner-friendly flow tools there is: hundreds of glowing fiber strands trail behind your hand, so even a simple wave looks spectacular. Below we cover how a LED fiber optic whip works, the core light whip techniques, how to film it, and how to keep the fibers in good shape.

What Is a Fiber Optic Whip?

A fiber optic whip is a handle with an LED light source at one end that feeds a bundle of flexible fiber strands. As you move it, every strand carries the light, painting wide, flowing trails through the air. Because the fibers are soft, it is forgiving to learn and safe to spin around yourself and others, which is why a LED fiber optic whip is a favorite for both flow arts and rave and festival performance.

Our BitWhip is app-controlled, so you set color, brightness, and patterns from your phone. If you want to compare it against other whips on the market, we did that honestly in our best fiber optic whips comparison.

Core Fiber Optic Whip Techniques

  1. The wave: the foundation. Move your hand smoothly side to side so the fibers ripple. Master this before anything else.
  2. Figure-eight: trace a sideways 8 in front of you to keep the fibers flowing continuously without tangling.
  3. Overhead spins: circle the whip above your head for big, sweeping arcs.
  4. Fans: sharp directional flicks that fan the strands out into a blade of light, great for photos.

Keep your feet planted and let the fibers do the work. Smooth, controlled motion always reads better than fast and jerky.

Filming Your Fiber Optic Whip

A fiber whip is built for light painting. To capture the trails on camera:

  • Camera on a tripod, manual or Bulb mode.
  • Shutter 15 to 30 seconds, ISO 100 to 200, aperture f/8 to f/11.
  • Spin in one spot for crisp, layered ribbons. A slightly lower brightness gives cleaner, more defined strands.
  • Use Analogue mode in the app, not PWM. On a whip’s bare fibers, PWM can record a faint strobe, especially with fast movement; Analogue keeps the strands smooth and continuous. Flow artists who want a tracer effect can switch to PWM on purpose.

Full walkthroughs are in our light painting tutorials.

Caring for Your Fibers

  • Gather the strands gently when storing; do not crush or kink them.
  • Keep the bundle away from heat sources, which can warp fiber.
  • Wipe the light end clean so the LEDs couple brightly into the fibers.

Single or Double?

Once a single whip feels natural, a Double BitWhip lets you spin two synchronized whips for symmetrical, dual-hand flow. Both run on the same RGB Critter BT system, so colors and patterns stay matched.

They create glowing, flowing light trails for flow arts, rave and festival performance, and light painting photography. Types include single and double LED fiber optic whips.

Can beginners use fiber optic whips?

Yes. The soft fibers and forgiving motion make a fiber optic whip one of the easiest flow tools to start with. Begin with the wave and figure-eight.

Can fiber optic whips be used at raves and festivals?

Absolutely. They are designed for night shows and festival stages, and because they are LED rather than fire, they are safe to use in a crowd.
