Why light up at all

Burning Man 2026 runs August 30 to September 7 in Black Rock City, Nevada, with the theme Axis Mundi. Nights on the playa are enormous and dark. Light is not decoration out there; it is how you are seen, how your friends find you, and how you avoid getting clipped by a bike at 2 a.m.

Three things follow from that, and they shape every recommendation in this guide:

1. Visibility is safety. A dark costume and a dark bike make you invisible to every cyclist and art car moving through the night. Wearable light is the difference between being part of the scenery and being an obstacle in it.
2. Light is how you find each other. A distinctive color or pattern on your costume is the easiest "that's our camp" beacon there is, and an app-controlled light lets your whole crew match colors on the spot.

Your body: the fiber optic costume

Power and dust: the tips that matter

1. Bring spare batteries, not just a charger. Everything runs on swappable 18650 cells with roughly 7 hours of runtime per charge. Bring spares; swap in seconds instead of hunting for a charger mid-burn. Two spares covers dusk-to-sunrise comfortably.
2. Charge in daylight. USB-C charging works fine off a solar generator or power bank during the day, so top up while you rest.
3. Respect the cold. Lithium cells drain faster in the cold. Keep your spare battery in an inside pocket, not your bike basket.
